SP Nano Presents at the International Symposium on Nanoengineered Composites

SP1-coated carbon fiber shown to lead to significant improvements
in the interfacial properties of PAN/Phenolic-composites

July 16, 2015, Yavne, Israel –– SP Nano Ltd, a world leader in innovative nanotechnology for enhanced textiles and composite materials, announced today that it will present its findings at the International Symposium on Nanoengineered Composites, July 15-17in Roskilde, Denmark.

The symposium will bring together specialists in the areas of materials mechanics and composite manufacturing and development to discuss new frontiers in advanced materials for energy and structural applications, including hybrid, hierarchical, and nano-, graphene and CNT reinforced composites.

In its paper titled Improved Interfacial Properties of PAN/Phenolic-Composites by Coating of Carbon Fabric with SP1/CNT Complex, SP Nano details the significant benefits in both interlaminar and through-thickness tensile strength from combining its SP1 protein together with carbon nanotubes (CNT) in the reinforcement of carbon fiber.

“Our SP1 technology has shown to be remarkably versatile across a range of structural fabrics and resins commonly used in the composites market,” said SP Nano CEO Eyal Shpilberg.  “Our PAN/Phenolic solution is already being tested by customers and we will continue to look for more partners to take this innovative solution to the market.”

In addition to its performance in composites, SP Nano is also making significant progress in the Mechanical Rubber Goods (MRG) market and recently completed its second successful industrial tests in Turkey using polyester yarn.  The benefits of SP1 technology in the MRG market relate both to the elimination of Resorcinol Formaldehyde Latex (RFL) and the improvements to the yarn weight and flexibility.

About SP Nano Ltd.

SP Nano is the developer of SP1, a revolutionary nano-reinforcement protein agent that will transform the composite materials and rubber industries by enabling the production of lighter, stronger and sustainable parts. Established in 2007, SP Nano is commercializing the use of carbon-based nanoparticles in the rapidly growing $152 billion US mechanical rubber goods (MRG) and $90 billion US composites markets. These markets includes raw materials such as carbon/glass fiber and aramid, and are commonly used in industries such as aerospace, construction, automotive and marine, wind energy and sports equipment. SP Nano’s proprietary SP1 technology can significantly improve the performance properties of composites, enabling cost-effective manufacturing of stronger, lighter parts. From its headquarters in Israel, SP Nano is working in close cooperation with a number of leading multinational companies to develop a range of innovative new commercial products for various end-markets.
